New Years’ Resolutions: For You And Your Career

It’s a new year and we all make the inevitable New Years’ Resolution or two.

Here’s a few tips  from AMA Career Service for your personal resolution list designed to assist you in your medical career and should be easy to keep.

  1. Update your CV.   The AMA Career Advice Service can help you with this by providing you with a template CV as well as a guide to building your CV.  AMA members can also receive a review of their CV at no cost.  For the guide email the AMA Career Adviser, Christine Brill, on careers@ama.com.au
  2. Consider your career options and find out more by visiting the Speciality Training Pathway Guide on the Career Resource Hub (www.ama.com.au/careers/pathways).  Here you can compare up to three specialty options at one time, and with over 62 specialty options, there is a lot of information here.
  3. Attend a workshop on preparing for and performing at an interview.  These workshops will give you all you need to know.  Again the Career Service can provide one on one support to help settle any pre-interview nerves.  An AMA member benefit.
  4. Register for doctportal Learning– your one-stop-shop for CPD tracking, and a FREE service for AMA members.  doctorportal Learning automatically tracks your learning/CPD (including points) for any medical college, or for those without a specialty, and generates reports to support your Medical Board of Australia reporting obligations. doctorportal.com.au also has a Jobs Board so check it out when looking for a new position or role. The Career Resource Hub also has links to all State and Territory Health Departments (www.ama.com.au/careers/medical-employment-opportunities).
  5. Visit the AMA Career Resource Hub (www.ama.com.au/careers) for information on and access to the career coaching options available to you.  This service is available to all members.  Professional career advice is provided by Christine who understands the profession.
  6. Take care of yourself.  This is really important.  Looking after yourself allows you to look after others.  There are some good links on the Career Resource Hub (www.ama.com.au/careers/looking-after-yourself) and of course the services of the national Doctors Health Service are available to you – links and phone numbers on this Career website page.  Looking after yourself also includes taking care of your finances.  Further information is on this webpage too.
  7. When looking for international employment opportunities visit the Carer website page dedicated to this (www.ama.com.au/careers/global-health).  Useful links to organisations and agencies facilitating overseas employment opportunities are on this page.
  8. Take control of your career and here the AMA can assist you.  To access the resources the AMA has created for you visit the AMA website www.ama.com.au and join the AMA for professional support and services.
