AMACDT meets National Rural Health Commissioner in Sydney

The AMA Council of Doctors in Training (AMACDT) met with Professor Paul Worley, National Rural Health Commissioner, at AMA NSW in Sydney on 28 July 2018 to discuss progress towards a National Rural Generalist Pathway (NRGP). AMA doctor in training members from across the country attended the meeting on 28-29 July 2018, along with trainee committee representatives and the Federal AMA President and Vice President to discuss current and emerging issues in medical education and training.

Key matters discussed

Progress towards a National Rural Generalist Pathway. Professor Paul Worley, National Rural Health Commissioner, attended the AMACDT meeting for an hour-long session to discuss the postgraduate standards, curriculum and assessment frameworks required for a NRGP, the scope of practice of a rural generalist, appropriate recognition and incentive to practice. The AMACDT discussed six key areas of focus moving forward: collegiality, creating networks, efficient training pathways, skills in primary care, emergency medicine and extended skills, incentives and professional choices. These will inform the work of the AMA NRGP working group.

Planning for a Gender equity roundtable. The AMACDT supported a proposal to hold a gender equity roundtable in March 2019 to look more broadly at how other industries have successfully shaped culture and systems to create gender neutral workplaces and how this might translate to changing medical workplaces and culture.
