AMA win for patients and general practice

The AMA welcomed the decision in January by the new Health Minister, the Hon Sussan Ley MP, to abandon proposed changes to Level B MBS items and commit to proper consultation with GPs on Government policies. This followed strong AMA advocacy and is good news for patients, GPs and GP registrars.

AMA President, A/Prof Brian Owler, has met with the Minister and has urged the Government to strengthen and support general practice and GP training, and to abandon other planned cuts to funding for GP services. As part of this the AMA will remain vigilant to ensure that any cuts do not impact on GP training and the ability of supervisors to remain viable and be available for supervising and teaching registrars. The AMA will continue to campaign to support general practice, and recently ran a number of forums across the country to hear what GPs have to say about the future of Medicare.
