Terms of reference for intern review released

The long awaited terms of reference for the AHMAC Review of Medical Intern Training have been released. Professor Andrew Wilson and Dr Anne-Marie Feyer have been appointed as Co-Reviewers to lead the review. The Review has been commissioned by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Health Council to examine the current medical internship model and consider potential reforms to support medical graduate transition into practice and further training. While the time frame for the review is unclear, the AMA has asked for a doctor in training representative to be on the expert advisory panel supporting the review. Public consultations are expected to commence in early 2015.

“This review should be used as an opportunity to examine and recommend enhancements to the features of our training system that support the continued production of a high-quality medical workforce.” Said Dr James Churchill, Chair AMACDT. “It is critical that the review of the current internship model focuses on maintenance of quality, rather than simply seeking cost shifting or savings, and is informed by appropriate and considered consultation and a robust review of the available evidence on medical training and practice in Australia.”
