October medicSA is now available

General practice is at the heart of Australian healthcare. Nearly nine of every 10 Australians will see a general practitioner (GP) this year. When asked, about the same proportion say their family doctor is the professional they trust most.

Yet the profession is in crisis. And the small number of medical students and junior doctors choosing general practice means there won’t be enough general practitioners to fill gaps in practices across the country, tomorrow and in the years ahead.

In this issue of medicSA, we’ve asked doctors and colleagues in key roles – beginning with AMA(SA) Committee of General Practice Chair Dr Bridget Sawyer – to give their perspectives on the crisis and their thoughts on quick and longer-term solutions.

Also in the October issue, AMA(SA) Council Chair Dr Peter Subramaniam gives a personal account of a moment that changed operating procedures and saved lives around the world, and our medical students’ societies’ presidents look to the end of their university training days.

Please enjoy the issue, and look out for our end-of-year wrap in December!
