AMA Submission to the Productivity Commission Consultation on indirect employment in aged care
AMA provided a submission to the Productivity Commission’s enquiry into indirect employment in aged care.
The AMA expressed its opposition to independent contractors, including through online platforms, providing nursing care and personal care in residential aged care and in home care. The AMA stressed that overreliance on independent contractors is not conducive to continuity of care and therefore the AMA could not support it.
The AMA said that the Productivity Commission, whose core work is to provide independent research and advice to Government on economic and social issues affecting the welfare of Australians, would be ideally placed to look into intersections between aged care and health care, perform cost-benefit analysis and provide recommendations for improvement that lead to improved health outcomes for older Australians, rather than conducting an enquiry into something that has already been thoroughly examined by the Aged Care Royal Commission.
