AMA Submission to Privacy Act 1988 Review Report

On 31 March the AMA provided a submission to the third iteration of the Privacy Act 1988 Review consultation by the Attorney General’s Department.

While the proposals contained in the Privacy Act Review Report are an improvement to the previous consultations, the AMA submission expresses concern over how the legislative proposals outlined in the Report, that are aimed to tackle big data companies and their deliberate profiling and targeting of consumers, could negatively impact healthcare, especially smaller GP or specialist practices. We argue that this ‘one size fits all’ approach may have some unintended consequences in the form of increased cost, increased administrative burden and increased compliance requirements for practices, without providing them with sufficient tools to be able to manage this new environment.
