nib MediGap introduces known gap

The introduction of a known gap scheme at nib follows the AMA’s ongoing calls for national consistency in schedules and known gap arrangements.

nib has formally advised the AMA and providers of upcoming changes to its MediGap network with the introduction of ‘known gap’ arrangements to commence 1 October 2024. It is important that members are aware of this change.

Specialists registered with the nib’s MediGap network will be able to charge a known gap of up to $500 following the changes. Further information is available from nib.

The AMA has long been calling on insurers to provide known gap arrangements, and to offer consistent rebates to patients across all states and territories, as part of its advocacy including through the AMA’s Private health insurance report cards. The AMA has continued to highlight that without adequate rebates for patients, and the impact on out-of-pocket costs on patients if there is no known gap option, private health care can become unaffordable.

The AMA’s Guide to Informed Financial Consent continues to provide advice and information to members and patients alike, to help them navigate healthcare funding in the private sector and help avoid bill shock.
