AMA standing in the corner of IMGs

AMA President Professor Steve Robson addressed the Federation of Bangladesh Medical Societies of Australia’s annual conference, telling attendees the AMA would continue standing up for IMGs.

Federal AMA President Professor Steve Robson highlighted the importance of supporting international medical graduates (IMGs) during an address at the annual convention of the Federation of Bangladesh Medical Societies of Australia (FBMSA) last Sunday.

Professor Robson praised the FMBSA and other multicultural groups for their significant contributions to Australia’s medical sector, and noted the great diversity that exists in the AMA.

He also acknowledged the many challenges IMGs face when arriving in Australia to train and work, noting the "harrowing tales” of racism, discrimination and prejudice, on top of issues with adjusting to how the Australian health system works and a lack of cultural orientation support.

Professor Robson told FMBSA conference attendees in Canberra that the AMA has a long history of advocating on behalf of IMGs and would continue to push for better support, including fairness and transparency in processes, proper recognition of overseas qualifications and fair pay and conditions.

The AMA is committed to do further research to address the barriers to registration and employment that IMGs face and to identify the supports they need to thrive, and we will be looking to involve IMGs in development of this research.
