Health economists agree — putting general practice at the heart of healthcare makes economic sense

The AMA President and CMO of Avant Mutual discuss underfunding of general practice in an MJA article and in the President’s Doctorama podcast this week.

AMA President Professor Steve Robson and Dr Michael Wright, CMO of Avant Mutual bring their perspectives as health economists to discuss the chronic underfunding of general practice in both an article and a podcast this week.

Writing in the AMA’s journal — the Medical Journal of Australia (MJA) — they examine the economics of general practice and its overall value to the health system. They argue underinvestment in general practice has dire effects now and into the future unless policy makers commit to much more funding.

Dr Wright also features on Professor Robson’s Doctorama podcast this week, offering his own insights into the economics of healthcare and the long arc of underinvestment in general practice.

Doctorama is streaming on all podcast platforms including Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
