AMA recognises leading doctors with awards

Three leading Victorian doctors have been recognised with significant AMA awards for their outstanding contributions to the medical profession.

Three distinguished Victorian doctors have been recognised with AMA awards for their outstanding contributions to the profession.

Physician and medical researcher Dr John Gorman received the AMA Gold Medal for his ground-breaking medical research to treat Rh disease. His resulting treatment, called RhoGAM in the US or Anti-D in Australia, has since saved millions of babies’ lives around the world.

The 2023 AMA President’s Award was presented to Associate Professor Magdalena Simonis, for her outstanding contribution to women’s health over a long and distinguished career. During the Covid pandemic, Associate Professor Simonis showed extraordinary leadership in working with migrant communities on protecting their health.

Dr Desiree Yap was recognised with the AMA Women’s Health Award for her major contributions to women’s health in Australia via organisations including the Victorian Medical Women’s Society, the Australian Federation of Medical Women and Women’s Health Victoria.
