Combating compassion fatigue

Drs4Drs are here for you 24/7 and this week offer some advice on dealing with ‘compassion fatigue’.

Being a doctor can be challenging. Doctors are often expected to offer care and compassion in a fast-paced and stressful work environment. If unaddressed, this can be one of the causes for burnout. However, there are steps you can follow to recharge your “emotional bank account”.

As important as it is to take care of others in your job, make sure to take some time out to take care of your own emotional needs. Building up strong relationships can be a good way to combat compassion fatigue by showing understanding for each other. Reach out to people you trust to ensure you are “filling” your emotional bank account.

Please also remember that you are not alone, Drs4Drs is here to help you, your spouse/partner and colleagues. Reach out to GPs and other specialists trained in doctors’ health. We offer state and territory based confidential, free and 24/7 health advisory services. In addition to this, a dedicated mental health support line can be reached via 1300 Dr4Drs or 1300 374 377 for crisis and non-urgent care alike.
