AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, said today that the Productivity Commission Draft Report into Mental Health is a welcome catalyst for much-needed political, sectoral, and community debate and discussion to urgently reshape our mental health system to better meet growing and more complex demand.

“The Commission's draft report highlights the extent of mental illness in Australia and the extent of the reforms needed to build a better mental health system,” Dr Bartone said.

Your Family Doctor and You: Partnering for Health

Australians are increasingly going to see their family doctor about their mental health care, with GPs the first destination for families and individuals in need of care.

This week is AMA Family Doctor Week, celebrating the compassion and dedication of Australia’s 37,000 GPs.

“Mental health issues being experienced by one member of a family can affect others, as well as colleagues and friends,” AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, said today.

A Melbourne cardiologist who singlehandedly started an international movement to encourage doctors to openly discuss their mental health struggles is the recipient of the 2019 AMA President’s Award.

Dr Geoff Toogood was presented with the award at the AMA National Conference in Brisbane tonight.

The President’s Award is given to a person who, in the opinion of the President, has made an outstanding contribution towards furthering the objectives of the AMA.

“The Health Minister, Greg Hunt, has listened closely to the AMA and delivered a strong Health Budget, with a particular emphasis on primary care, led by general practice,” Dr Bartone said.

Social media can be a good way to stay in contact with family and friends over the holiday season, but it can have some negative effects.

“Almost four out of five Australians used some form of social media during 2018, and Christmas is a popular time to use social media,” AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, said today.

“Over the Christmas period, Facebook posts and photos increase significantly, and many shoppers use social media as inspiration for Christmas gifts and decorations.

AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, said today that making plans, being organised, and managing your physical and emotional health can reduce stress and make Christmas and New Year a positive time for your mental health.

Dr Bartone said that the holiday season can be the most mentally stressful time of the year.

“There is a lot to do at Christmas, especially if family members are returning home from interstate or overseas,” Dr Bartone said.

AMA Position Statement on Mental Health 2018


The AMA is calling for a national, overarching mental health “architecture”, and proper investment in both prevention and treatment of mental illnesses.

Almost one in two Australian adults will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime, yet mental health and psychiatric care are grossly underfunded when compared to physical health, AMA President, Dr Michael Gannon, said today.

Medicinal cannabis has great potential for use in palliative care, juvenile epilepsy, and forms of spasticity, but doctors remain concerned about its potential diversion into the general community, following moves by the Senate to allow easier importation of cannabis. The drug is also a major source of mental illness in the community and AMA President, Dr Michael Gannon, says it is essential that whatever is being brought into the country is safe, even when it is being used in the palliative care setting.
