A Parliamentary Committee report has accepted many of the AMA’s recommendations on how to improve the care of vulnerable Australians in residential aged care facilities, including the need for more registered nurses.

AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, who appeared before the Inquiry in May, said that the recommendations of the Report on the Inquiry into the Quality of Care in Residential Aged Care Facilities in Australia largely align with AMA policy.

The Royal Commission into aged care must consider the case for a regulated registered nurse-to-resident ratio that is sufficiently flexible and adapts to the specific needs of the residents in each aged care facility, AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, said today.

The AMA’s submission to the consultation around the terms of reference for the recently-announced Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety broadly supports Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s proposals, but argues that more attention must be paid to clinical issues.

AMA Position Statement on Health and Care of Older People 2018

Elder abuse - physical, psychological, and financial abuse and neglect of older people - is likely to rise as Australia’s population ages, the AMA says in a new Position Statement.

The AMA Federal Council has formally adopted the Position Statement on Health and Care of Older Australians 2018, an “umbrella” statement over a suite of position statements on aged care.
