A proposal to publicly publish the staff-to-resident ratios at all residential aged care facilities is a good start, but a flexible registered nurse-to-resident ratio must still be set by regulation, AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, said today.

The AMA has made submissions to two Parliamentary inquiries into draft legislation regarding the aged care sector, the Aged Care Amendment (Staffing Ratio Disclosure) Bill 2018 and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission Bill 2018.

Today’s announcement of an additional $106 million for the aged care system is a much-needed boost for a sector that has been neglected for far too long, but does not address the urgent workforce challenges facing the sector, AMA President, Dr Tony Bartone, said.

The Federal Government today announced an extra $16 million for the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, $40 million to support services in regional, rural, and remote areas, and $50 million to support residential aged care providers and their staff to improve quality and standards of care.
