Child-safe environments
A child-safe environment is a place where children and young people are safe and always protected.
South Australia’s Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017 and Child Safety (Prohibited Persons) Act 2016 require a broad range of state authorities, non-government organisations, sole traders, and individuals to provide child-safe environments.
To meet the obligations of the Safety Act, organisations (including health services such as general practices, day procedure centres and private hospitals) that work, or are likely to work, with children must:
- have in place child-safe policies and procedures that comply with the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations
- meet the South Australian working with children check obligations, and
- lodge a Child Safe Environment Compliance Statement.
