Stop Elder Abuse Campaign 2019

The 2019 campaign highlights the message ‘Know the signs. Speak up and help stop elder abuse’ and advises people to call the Elder Abuse Prevention Phone Line Support and Referral Service 1800 372 310 if they have concerns about themselves or others, or to visit the website www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/stopelderabuse for more information.

Around one in 20 older Australians is experiencing some form of abuse from someone they know and trust, who is often a member of their own family.

People experiencing Elder Abuse may display fear, sadness and neglect, amongst other signs, and abuse can be physical, financial, sexual, chemical, neglect or emotional.

Our campaign this year is particularly focussed on raising awareness amongst hair and beauty professionals as their regular interactions with clients place them in a prime position to notice signs of abuse.

We are advertising through local press, radio and social media and have a range of promotional posters, postcards and a wallet card.

You are very welcome to download the materials from www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/stopelderabuse and use the hashtag #stopelderabuse if you are posting on social media.

Remember, if you have concerns, call the Elder Abuse Prevention Phone Line Support and Referral Service on 1800 372 310 for free, confidential advice and support from a trained staff member.

The updated Stop Elder Abuse Communications Toolkit (attached) contains examples of our campaign materials and a newsletter article for you to adapt, if necessary, and publish.

If you would like printed copies, email us at officeforageingwell@sa.gov.au or call 8204 2420.
