Prescribing a safer system for pharmaceuticals

The AMA(SA) welcomes today’s announcement by the Liberals to invest $7M into development of a real time prescription monitoring system.

There have been a number of deaths as a result of doctor shopping and abuse of pharmaceuticals which may have been prevented with real time prescription monitoring.

The AMA and the Coroner have previously called for such a system to be introduced as a real safety measure so today’s announcement is a most welcome development.

The AMA(SA) seeks the involvement of GP and Specialists in development so that the system is usable; integrates with current clinical systems with the national initiative in this area.  This is vital as tracking across state boundaries will greatly improve the safety.

We would urge all parties to commit to such a project to assist in reducing the growing abuse of prescription medicines and increase public safety.
