AMA Supports Doctors for Doctors Day 2002

The Australian Medical Association supports the efforts of doctors and health professionals working around the globe addressing health crises and the lack of access for millions of people to treatment for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and sleeping sickness.

AMA President, Dr Kerryn Phelps, said today that Doctors for Doctors Day helps to build support and awareness among the Australian medical profession and the broader community of the doctors who volunteer important work undertaken by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).

"It is the generosity of these doctors, who give their time and expertise to work in the world's most troubled areas, that provides invaluable medical relief to victims of famine, war, and natural and man-made disasters," Dr Phelps said.

"The AMA backs the MSF Doctors for Doctors Day, as it signals the commitment of the Australian medical profession to the health of populations around the world."

Every year, MSF Australia sends more than 100 volunteer doctors, nurses and other health professionals to work in medical relief projects overseas. MSF has again this year sent every doctor in Australia an information kit asking for their support.

"The AMA joins MSF in encouraging our doctors and health professionals to help their colleagues around the globe to continue to provide emergency medical relief by donating a day's pay to medical projects in the world's trouble spots," Dr Phelps said.
