AMA x DEA Webinar 2024: Climate change and sustainability: leadership and action from Australian doctors

The annual AMA and Doctors for the Environment webinar was held this week.

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) and Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA) hosted their fourth joint webinar on September 3, 2024, exploring the critical intersection of climate change and sustainable healthcare.

The event, themed "Climate change and sustainability: Leadership and action from Australian doctors," attracted strong interest from the medical community, with 146 participants in attendance.

The webinar featured a distinguished panel of speakers, including Hon. Ged Kearney, Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, who provided insights into the Federal Government's commitment to addressing the health impacts of climate change. James Katte from the Safety Commission discussed strategies to reduce the healthcare sector's emissions by eliminating low-value or harmful practices, while Dr. Catherine Pendrey focused on the implementation of the Australian Medical Council standards for primary medical program assessment and accreditation.

The sustainability work conducted by the Australian medical colleges was impressive. They presented their innovative approaches to sustainable healthcare, demonstrating the growing momentum within the sector. By integrating climate health into medical education, conducting research, advocating for policy changes, and implementing sustainable practices, these colleges are playing a vital role in creating a healthier and more resilient future for the nation.
