AMA Position Statement on The role of the AMA in training disputes with Colleges – 2017

The AMA has developed a new Position Statement on The role of the AMA in training disputes with Colleges. The position statement supports a high level, advocacy role for the Federal AMA in addressing systemic complaints, whilst confirming the role of the State AMAs to assist members with training/industrial matters/disputes on a one on one basis.

Providing access to an effective, trusted and responsive process for managing disputes relating to employment and training should be a fundamental part of health service and training provider policy and practice. The AMA recommends that clear processes must be in place to confidentially address disputes, and to provide for disputes and appeals in timely manner. Best practice models of appeals processes characteristically ensure natural justice, have clear processes and criteria and seek to avoid the potential for litigation.

“There is also an opportunity for the AMA to assume a more proactive role as the provider of training, resources and support services to trainees and supervisors. Areas for consideration include performance management, giving and receiving feedback, unconscious bias training, communication skills, conflict resolution and dealing with complaints, peer mentoring and assistance programs,” said Chair, AMACDT, Dr John Zorbas.
