AMA President flys to Canberra for Federal Budget

AMA President Omar Khorshid has had a busy schedule in Canberra this week, meeting politicians in pre-budget talks and fronting the media with Budget reaction.

In only his second visit to Canberra since becoming AMA President in August last year, Dr Khorshid, who is based in Perth, has been front and centre of the AMA’s Federal Budget response.

Prior to the Budget being delivered on Tuesday evening, Dr Khorshid held meetings with the Health and Ageing Minister Greg Hunt, the Leader of the Opposition, Labor’s Anthony Albanese and Labor Shadow Health Minister Mark Butler, as well as health officials from the Department. It was also a chance to meet influential press gallery journalists.

As Budget lock-up ended and the Treasurer Josh Frydenberg finished delivering his Budget speech, Dr Khorshid addressed the assembled press gallery media, ensuring the AMA’s immediate response to the Budget’s health spend was one of the first to be communicated.

He then conducted one-on-one interviews with journalists, setting the pace for the rest of the week, which has included interviews with the ABC, Sky News, SBS and other national outlets.

During the week Dr Khorshid had the opportunity to meet with AMA staff, many for the first time face-to-face.
