Since the formation of the Australian Medical Association in 1962, the following distinguished members have had the honour to hold the elected officer positions of AMA President, Vice President, Chair and Treasurer.

The Gold Medal of the Association is the highest honour the Association can bestow.  It may be awarded to and bestowed on members of the profession who have rendered outstanding services to the Association, to the practice of medicine, or to the community, and shall not be awarded by virtue of holding any office or position within the Association, a State AMA, Craft Group or Special Interest Group.

The AMA President's Award is granted to a person, not necessarily a medical practitioner, who, in the opinion of the President, has made an outstanding contribution towards fostering the objectives of the AMA.

Former AMA President honoured on Queen's Birthday 14 June 2011 - 5:30pm

AMA President, Dr Steve Hambleton, today paid tribute to former President, Professor Kerryn Phelps AM, who yesterday was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Professor Phelps, who served as Federal AMA President from 2000-2003, was the first woman elected to the position.

Dr Steve Hambleton was elected Federal President of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) in May 2011, after serving a two-year term as Federal Vice President.

Dr Hambleton graduated from the University of Queensland in 1984 and commenced full-time general practice in Queensland in 1987. He has been working at the same general practice at Kedron in Brisbane since 1988.

Dr Hambleton was President of AMA Queensland and an AMA Federal Councillor. He served on the AMA Council of General Practice at a State and Federal level for more than 10 years. Dr Hambleton was the AMA representative on the National Immunisation Committee from 2006-2010, and was a member of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee for two years until 2009. He has been a member of the AMA Taskforce on Indigenous Health since 2006 and is currently the Chair of the Taskforce.

New AMA President to be elected unopposed 13 May 2011 - 1:30pm

AMA Vice President, Dr Steve Hambleton, will be elected unopposed as President later this month.

AMA Secretary General, Mr Francis Sullivan, today announced the nominations for the positions of President, Vice President, Chairman of AMA Council and Treasurer.
