Multi-drug resistant gonorrhoea
The so-called ‘super gonorrhoea’ attracting media headlines has recently been detected in Australia. The public is being advised to see their GP or Sexual Health Clinic as soon as possible if they have symptoms.
Two cases of multi-drug resistant gonorrhoea have now been detected in Western Australia and in Queensland. This strain of gonorrhoea can be difficult to treat and the situation is being monitored closely by public health authorities.
GPs are advised to get a travel history on all patients who present with a sexually transmissible infection. For testing, take swabs for culture and antimicrobial resistance testing, particularly from patients who may have acquired the disease in Southeast Asia.
