The AMA is very pleased that the $5 cut to the Medicare rebate has been taken off the table. The AMA argued strongly against the so-called optional $5 co-payment for some time. Australia needs to be investing in general practice to have a sustainable health care system. Keeping people well and out of hospital care is the best and most cost-effective way to run the health sector.

The AMA remains opposed to the remaining element of the second co-payment proposal; the freeze to Medicare rebate indexation, which extends out to 2018.
