Belated triumph for pregnant netballers

Vice-President of the Federal AMA, Dr Trevor Mudge, said today that Netball Australia's decision to lift the interim ban on pregnant players in netball competitions is a belated triumph for commonsense.

A Federal Court injunction against the interim ban was awarded, last July, to Adelaide Ravens' captain, Trudy Gardner, then 15 weeks pregnant.

Dr Mudge said the decision by Netball Australia to lift the ban gives back the right to pregnant women to play a sport they enjoy.

"Litigation against Netball Australia by players is indicative that reforms need to be addressed to ensure that it is the game that remains the focal point of players," Dr Mudge said.

"The physical and social benefits of organised sport should remain available and accessible for pregnant women.

"Sport is about health, fitness, competition and companionship. It should not be clouded by legal issues - real or perceived.

"Women are careful and cautious during pregnancy - they listen to medical advice. If a woman is told that her specific conditions make playing sport a risk, she should not play sport," Dr Mudge said.

Dr Mudge reiterated that playing sport and keeping fit are beneficial to women during pregnancy.
