Federal Government gives commitment on medical indemnity

AMA President, Dr Kerryn Phelps, said today that the Federal Government has given a clear commitment to look at long term solutions to the medical indemnity concerns raised by APRA's investigation into the soundness of Australian Medical Insurance Ltd.

Dr Phelps met first thing this morning with Assistant Treasurer, Senator Helen Coonan, who gave assurances that the Government is fully aware of the seriousness of the situation and will consult with the AMA on all the options in the lead up to April's Medical Indemnity Summit.

During the day, Dr Phelps discussed the issue with Health Minister, Senator Kay Patterson, focussing on the unsustainable nature of the current medical indemnity system and the serious implications for the health system.

"The AMA is happy with the Government's initial positive response to the predicament facing patients, doctors, the community and the medical indemnity insurance industry," Dr Phelps said.

"However, we have got a long way to go in a very short period of time.

"Through our discussions today we have agreed to work together to find practical solutions to a problem that poses a genuine threat to the equitable provision of health services to the Australian community."
