AMA National Conference 2002 Awards

Prestigious awards for contributions to Australian health care were presented at the AMA National Conference 2002 in Canberra.

They are as follows:

AMA 2002 Woman In Medicine Award - Dr Deborah Colville (Victoria)

Dr Colville, a Melbourne ophthalmologist, has researched and promoted medical educational techniques in Australia and overseas, making a significant contribution to medical research and education.

AMA 2002 Women's Health Award - Dr Frances Boyle (NSW)

Currently the Chair of the Medical Oncology Group of Australia, Dr Boyle has contributed significantly to many areas of women's health, particularly breast cancer.

Wyeth/Medical Journal of Australia Award for original research published in MJA

Dr Ian Scott, Dr Michael Coory and Ms Catherine Harper for research into reducing inpatient mortality from myocardial infarction.

Best Individual Contribution to Health Care in Australia - Dr Peter Fitzpatrick (NT)

Dr Fitzpatrick has devoted his entire medical career to working tirelessly for the people of remote communities in the Northern Territory.

President's Award - Dr Paul Bauert (NT)

Darwin-based paediatrician, Dr Paul Bauert, is President of AMA (NT). Dr Bauert is a campaigner for better health for Indigenous children. He has made Indigenous health issues a priority for the AMA.

Indigenous Peoples' Medical Scholarship Award - Mr David Nichols (Tas)

AMA Special Contribution Award - Dr Stephen Clarke, Dr Geoffrey Metz, and Dr Col Owen - for outstanding input to production of the Relative Value Study (RVS).
