AMA calls on budding film-makers to "Party Safe"

Budding film-makers are being encouraged to enter the Australian Medical Association Community Service Announcement Award for 2002 - with a first prize of $5,000.

The theme for this year's competition is "Party Safe". The aim is to project positive messages about reducing harm associated with party drugs.

AMA Federal President, Dr Kerryn Phelps, said the award encouraged film-makers to produce a creative 30-second Community Service Announcement (CSA) for television.

"We need to deliver an effective message to all Australians - especially young people - to reduce the harm associated with the use of party drugs.

"We would prefer people not to take recreational drugs but, if they must use them, it is important that they do so safely and responsibly," Dr Phelps said.

Judges this year are Dr Phelps; spokesperson for the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, Mr Paul Dillon; and Tasmanian general practitioner and Chair of the AMA's Public Health Committee, Dr John Davis.

Dr Phelps said the AMA CSA Award is an excellent opportunity for entrants to influence community thinking on important public health issues.

The AMA is a strong advocate in addressing public health issues such as tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs, which are emerging as significant public health issues.

Entry forms are available through the AMA Federal Office in Canberra on Tel (02) 6270 5400, and all entries are due by Friday November 22, 2002.
