H1N1 Influenza 09 (Human Swine Influenza)

On 17 June 2009 the Australian government announced that all jurisdictions will begin to move to a new Australian response phase called PROTECT.  Please find attached the latest summary sheet for general practitioners as of 18 June 2009 from the Commonwealth Chief Medical Officer to Australian medical practitioners about the PROTECT phase. This document contains new clinical case definitions, information on vulnerable patient groups, advice on laboratory testing, collecting specimens, infection control, management of cases and contacts and contact details of local public health units.

This advice supercedes previous summary sheets and information provided by the Federal government to doctors.

Please be aware that while this information is correct as at 18 June 2009, the summary sheet may need to be further updated over time. The Chief Medical Officer has therefore advised that the most up-to-date version of this summary sheet will be maintained on the health professionals page of the Commonwealth health emergency website (http://www.healthemergency.gov.au).
