AMA 16th National Conference 2004 - AMA Men's Health Award

The AMA's Men's Health Award has been won by noted sexual health physician and GP, Dr Darren Russell, for his promotion of men's sexual health needs.

The award acknowledges a major contribution to men's health in Australia.

Presenting the award at the AMA's National Conference 2004, AMA President, Dr Bill Glasson, said Dr Russell has a significant reputation within the profession and in the community and strongly believes in fighting discrimination against his patients.

"His strong sense of social justice at every level has led to his involvement in the sexual health treatment and public health needs of marginalised people," Dr Glasson said.

"Against serious opposition he has often assisted Indigenous Australians, gay men, drug and alcohol addicts, sex workers and people from non-English speaking backgrounds."

In addition to his clinical and community work, Dr Russell has also overseen many major public health campaigns to reduce the mortality and morbidity from sexually transmissible infections, including HIV.
