General Practice Standards - 2005

1. The AMA supports the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) as the appropriate body to develop the professional standards in general practice.

2. The RACGP Practice Standards Committee of Council (or its successor) must undertake genuine consultation with general practitioners, other professional groups, the community and consumer organisations in any revision of standards for general practice.

3. Practising general practitioners must form the majority of any group determining the RACGP standards for general practice and adequately reflect the diversity of general practice.

4. The AMA Council of General Practice must be consulted in any revision of the standards.

5. Accrediting bodies must be included in any revision of the standards.

6. The standards must recognise the diversity of general practice.

7. Standards for the purposes of accreditation only relate to practice infrastructure and clinical processes, not GPs' clinical practise.

8. Accrediting bodies must interpret the standards in a consistent manner based on the interpretation provided by the profession through the RACGP.
