He says that in the past few years, universities have significantly increased recruitment of medical students to address the country's doctor shortage, but this hasn't flowed onto other parts of the training system.

Dr Pesce talks on ABC Radio National's Life Matters program about Labor's commitment to invest heavily in telemedicine. Dr Pesce says that the announcement sets a great precedent for health reform, because so far, there is no ability for Government-funded services to fund anything other than face-to-face consultations. But he says telemedicine is not the solution to all the problems in Australia's health system, and there needs to be a commitment to consultation with doctors on how telemedicine will work best for doctors and patients.

Amid media reports that a Labor-funded GP Super Clinic in Strathpine, Queensland, is damaging nearby practices, Dr Pesce speaks with Alex Sloan about the AMA's view on the Labor Party's Super Clinics policy. He says GP Super Clinics should be set up in areas where there are not existing general practices, and where there is no way that existing general practices can meet the needs of the community. Both parties should discuss any GP Super Clinics policy in consultation with the profession, Dr Pesce says.

As part of the National Health Reform Consultation Summit at Canberra Hospital today, the AMA presented the Prime Minister and the Health Minister with a list of health policy priorities for immediate implementation to give Australians a better health system.

The AMA Priority Investment Plan for Australia’s Health System identifies seven key areas of the health system where urgent action will make a real difference for people seeking access to quality health services.

AMA President, Dr Andrew Pesce, said the AMA Plan is simple, it is immediate, it is affordable, it is practical, and it is common sense.

“We are offering the Government real solutions to real problems,” Dr Pesce said.
